McCorkell Will Dispute Set for September

Gaveldown

As I have previously discussed, Robert McCorkell’s sister recently had a New Brunswick judge issue atemporary injunction on public policy grounds to prevent his estate, andvaluable coin collection, from being sent out of province and into the hands ofthe neo-Nazi organization, the National Alliance.

This case is set to proceedin September and is expected to focus on the limits of free speech.  Fred Steed, the lawyer representingMcCorkell’s executor and the National Alliance’s interests, says the giftrepresents the “interests of freedom of speech” and exists within the limits offree expression.  He wishes tocross-examine Isabelle McCorkill “to determine if she is a genuine plaintiff orsomeone simply standing in for the civil rights group, the Southern Poverty LawCentre.”

Another hearing is also setto determine whether to allow intervener status to the Centre for Israel andJewish Affairs, the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith, or the NewBrunswick government.
