Caramadre Asks Appellate Court for Release
As I have previously discussed, Cranston estate plannerJoseph Caramadre remains jailed after U.S. District Court Judge William E.Smith denied his request for release while he awaits sentencing for his role inan investment scheme targeting the mentally ill. Because Caramadre previously lied on thestand multiple times, Smith didn’t buy Caramadre’s representations that he didnot pose a suicide risk.
Caramadre is now asking a federal appeals court to free him, arguing Smith ignored case law in determining Caramadre is a threat tohimself. Caramadre also argues Smithdenied his request after being annoyed by Caramadre’s attempt to withdraw hisguilty pleas to fraud and conspiracy. Caramadre could face up to ten years in prison.
