DOMA Ruling Impacts Insurance Benefits for Married Same-Sex Couples
As I have previously discussed, the Supreme Court found the Defense Against Marriage Act to be unconstitutional, thus allowing married same-sex couples in states allowing gay marriage to receive hundreds of benefits available to married couples under federal law. One of the benefit impacted are insurance benefits. Now a person with health insurance through an employer in a same sex marriage will not be taxed for the employer’s contribution to the spouse’s coverage. This change will help same sex couples across the nation financially.
