Tax Planning for Green Card Holders

GreencardJohn L. Campbell (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Michael J. Stegman (Cincinnati, Ohio) have published their article entitled Confronting the New Expatriation Tax: Advice for the U.S. Green Card Holder, 35 ACTEC Journal 266 (2009).

The editor’s synopsis of the article is below:

The authors examine the intricacies involved in planning for Green Card holders, as well as U.S. Citizens who formally expatriate, to avoid or at least minimize the impact of the new expatriation tax.  Among the solutions discussed are steps and strategies to steer clear of covered expatriate status or, failing that, using an expatriation trust to keep assets outside the reach of the mark-to-market tax.  The article concludes with checklists of things to do and not to do.
