EXCLUSIVE: Marjorie Taylor Greene Shares Plans To Eliminate the Home Equity Tax: A ‘Gift to the American People’
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has introduced a bill called the “No Tax on Home Sales Act,” which would remove all federal capital gains taxes on profits made from selling a primary home. Currently, homeowners can exclude up to $250,000 of profit if single or $500,000 if married, but anything above that is taxed. Greene’s bill would eliminate those caps, meaning no federal capital gains tax would be owed no matter how large the profit. She says this change is long overdue, especially as home prices have increased significantly in recent decades.
Greene argues that the bill would provide major relief for older homeowners who have lived in their homes for many years and are now facing high taxes when they sell. She also believes it could help ease the housing shortage by encouraging more people to list their homes. According to her, many homeowners are holding back from selling because they don’t want to face a large tax bill, especially if they’re downsizing or moving for retirement. By removing that burden, she hopes to make it easier for people to move and for new buyers to access homes.
The bill would only apply to primary residences and would not cover second homes or investment properties. While Greene says the proposal gives Americans “a break” and rewards them for building equity, critics argue it could mostly benefit wealthier households and reduce federal tax revenue. Some housing experts also point out that the impact on overall housing supply is uncertain. The bill’s future in Congress is unclear, but it has already sparked a lot of debate.
