Jury Rules Pickford Agreement is Valid
Oscars are protected from sale by agreement between the Academy and the receiver of the award. A jury has upheld this agreement despite the fact that the person whose estate was trying to sell 3 Oscars was not a direct heir of Pickford or her third husband, Buddy Rogers. Pickford was one of the founding members of the Academy. She received 2 awards, and her third husband Buddy had received an honorary award. The Academy is pleased with the verdict because they believe this agreement protects the unique value of the award. The judge has yet to issue final judgment in the case, but the Academy feels that the jury verdict will hold.
