Sending Cremains into Space

An earlier entry on this blog discussed how James Doohan, “Scotty” of Star Trek fame, is going to have some of his cremains sent into earth orbit by Space Services.

Since Doohan’s death, there has been a surge in popularity in this service with more than 25 people signing up.

Here is some additional information about the flight scheduled for this fall:

  • Amount of a person’s cremains sent into orbit = 1 or 7 grams
  • Cost = $995 for 1 gram; $5,300 for 7 grams
  • Number of “passengers” on next flight = 18
  • Name of flight = Legacy
  • Launch location = Omelek Island in the Kwajalein Atoll, the Marshall Islands
  • Date of launch = After September 30, 2005
  • Length of flight = one orbit of the earth is considered a success but flight could last several hundred years
  • Inscriptions = short inscriptions may accompany the remains
  • Profit = after years of unprofitable operation, Space Services is now in the black
