Symposium on Exploring Unsupervised Probate — Call for Papers

Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac University School of Law, The Quinnipiac Probate Law Journal and the Connecticut Bar Foundation are pleased to announce a call for papers for a Symposium on Exploring Unsupervised Probate, to be held at the law school’s North Haven, Connecticut campus on Friday April 20, 2018. The symposium will explore the experience of states that have adopted (in at least some form) unsupervised or informal probate for the settlement of decedents’ estates. In the morning portion of the symposium, academic speakers will address developments and trends in unsupervised probate across the nation and examine the advantages and disadvantages of unsupervised probate. Issues to be covered may include cost, speed, administrative efficiency, protection of heir and beneficiary interests, dispute avoidance and resolution, incidence of fiduciary misfeasance and malfeasance, and user satisfaction. An afternoon panel or panels will discuss recent Connecticut efforts to streamline the probate process and consider whether additional changes are desirable.

The Quinnipiac Probate Law Journal will publish selected articles from the symposium in an issue slated for publication in the fall of 2018.

Confirmed speakers already include Prof. Mary F. Radford of the Georgia State University College of Law and Prof. Gerry W. Beyer of the Texas Tech University School of Law.

Legal academics interested in participating in the symposium should contact Professor Jeffrey Cooper (Jeffrey.cooper@quinnipiac.edu) to express interest or to ask questions.
