Other Opinions on the Estate Tax Repeal

A collection of letters to the editor in USA Today reflects various opinions regarding the estate tax.

An especially interesting comment was made by James M. Mack of Carefree, Arizona:

[The] characterization of any reduction or repeal of the estate tax as a “giveaway” betrays a cynical attitude regarding the relationship between government and taxpayers. The money sought by the government as estate tax belongs to the taxpayer, not the government. Allowing the taxpayer or his estate to retain those dollars cannot be considered a giveaway unless one believes the taxpayer’s money and property belong to the government, and the government decides how much the taxpayer may claim as his own.
