The Elderly and Their Pets

Pet and elder

Living with pets can be hazardous for elderly individuals. Walking them can be dangerous, and many animals pose a tripping risk. What can you do to protect your elderly loved ones from this danger?

  • Suggest a home care worker tag along on the dog walks
  • Offer to take the pet to training classes
  • Offer to walk the dog yourself

Whatever you do, don’t separate your elderly loved one from that source of unconditional love. Pets can lower blood pressure, aid in socialization, and prevent feelings of isolation. The bond between an elderly loved one and a pet is worth the risk.
