New York May Adopt Opt-Out Policy for Organ Donation
New York Senators Duane and Squadron proposed S7725, a bill that would create an “opt out” organ donation system for New York state, making everyone an automatic organ donor. Instead of registering to become an organ donor in New York, individuals who apply for a New York State Drivers License can “opt-out” of being organ donors.
Proponents of the bill feel that this is necessary to raise exceptionally low organ donation rates in New York. Currently, New York ranks 47th in the United States for percentage of residents who are organ donors.
Special thanks to Kyle Wolf (J.D. candidate, Texas Tech School of Law) for bringing this to my attention.
