Artist Creates Paintings From Human Cremains
Since 1998, Wayne D. Gilbert has been using human remains in the construction of his paintings. Wayne uses abandoned cremains that he obtains from mortuaries. He doesn’t add any coloring, but he does mix the cremains with a binder. The sheets he paints on are also made from human residue. He leaves the ashes from each person separate and has a startling range of tones – whites, tans, grays, and charcoals. He also annotates the donors’ names on the back or edge of each work.
