Nursing Home Statistics
Though many families of elderly loved ones believe that their loved ones will receive excellent long term care in a nursing home, statistics found on the Masters in Health Care website indicate that problems in long term care may be more prevalent than many believe. Below are a few of these statistics.
- More than thirty percent of nursing homes report experiencing resident abuse.
- Nearly all nursing homes had at least one deficiency in 2005.
- As many as 5,000 elder deaths may be caused by negligence.
- In a single eight hour shift, a nurse may observe up to thirty incidents of aggression.
- Nearly all nursing homes hire and employ at least one convicted criminal.
- One in four nursing homes receive citations for causing the death of or causing serious injury to a patient.
