Texas Organ Donation Increases
According to NBCDFW, “[t]he Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is signing up Texans in record numbers to organ and tissue donors.” In Texas, a citizen can register to become an organ donor when they renew their driver’s license. The decision is irrevocable by the donor’s family. The ease is the process is being toted as the reason that organ donor registration has increased. Now that the clerk at the DPS office can ask whether a person would like to be an organ donor, the number of new organ donors has skyrocketed.
When the organ donor registry started, the Southwest Transplant Alliance could barely get 50,000 new organ donors to register in a year. Now, the DPS is registering three times that amount in one month. In January of 2013, the DPS registered about 150,000 new organ donors.
