Organ Donor Rule Blocks Dying Girl From Receiving Transplant

Donor10-year-old Sarah Murnaghan, is dying of cysticfibrosis. She only has weeks to live. Sarah is eligible for adult donor lungs, but the organ donor rules state that she can only get the lungs after the lungsare offered to an adult who may be in better condition than Sarah. Child lungsare rarer than adult lungs. As a result, Sarah’s parents added Sarah’s name tothe adult donor list believing that it would increase the chance of atransplant. However, the organ donor rules changed that belief. Sarah’s parents are challenging the rule. However, the appeal was declined. To get an exception, the familystarted an online petition. The petition has nearly 12,000 signaturesso far.
