Inheritance Awareness Campaign for Afghan Women
A campaign sponsored by the U.S. government consisting of ads andworkshops in the Kabul province is trying to spread the word that women areentitled to a share of their deceased husband’s property.
In Afghanistan, very few people leave wills or know the law. Even if women are aware that theirinheritance rights are being ignored, few object due to family dynamics.
The program seems to be working as dozens of women being takenadvantage of by their male relatives are seeking assistance in recovering theirrightful inheritance. The program isalso reaching out to men, who in many cases do not know women are entitled toinherit.
According to the U.S. Agency for International Development’s LandReform, the entire program cost less than $74,000, and the agency hopes tocontinue the education campaign in other provinces.
