Maryland’s New Slayer Statute
Maryland has passed a new law meant to prevent killers frombenefitting from victims’ estates. Thenew bill is named after Ann Sue Metz, who was killed by her husband, MarshallMetz. Ann’s family supported the billafter being forced to defend Ann’s estate from Marshall. From his jail cell, Marshall sold the familyhome and took control of Ann’s assets to pay for his own criminal defense.
Effective October 1, 2013, the Anne Sue Metz Law will preventsomeone who has “feloniously and intentionally kill[ed]” another person frominheriting from that person.
