One method of determining which states have the mostcharitable activity is to look at the percentage of tax returns claimingcharitable deductions.

Maryland had the highest percentage of tax returns claimingcharitable deductions with 40.1%.  Thisled to a total giving of $3.9 billion with a median contribution of$2,969.  New Jersey had the secondhighest percentage of tax returns with 36% and Connecticut third with35.9%.  Utah, Minnesota and Virginia wereclose behind.
