Helping Children Deal with Death

Sadkid

Children often have trouble coping with the loss of a lovedone.  Here are some tips to help them dealwith the grieving process:

  • First, have an honest discussion when breaking the news to achild.  Let the child react however theymay need to and let them know you’re available.
  • Avoid euphemisms when describing death so the child is notconfused about what happened to their loved one.
  • Keep an eye on the child to check if their grieving isbecoming too severe.
  • If the child is still grieving six months after the death, consider a professional mental health counselor.
  • Don’t shy away from talking about the death; it is importantthe child understands that death is a part of life.
  • Surround your child with support, whether it’s through otherfamily members, school counselors, teachers, or support groups.
