Consent Required to Pull the Plug in Canada
The Supreme Court of Canada called this case a “tragic, yet increasingly common conflict,” but dismissed an appeal that would havegiven doctors at Toronto’s Sunnybrook hospital the ability to end life supportfor Hassan Rasouli against his family’s wishes. Hassan Rasouli, 61, has been ona ventilator and feeding tube since a botched brain surgery in 2010. Doctors atthe hospital are convinced that there is no hope for Rasouli’s recovery. However, Rasouli’s wife has not lost hope, believing that her husband has someminimal level of consciousness.
