Swindler Sentenced to 63 Months

As I have previously discussed, Akihiko Siegfried stole a lifetime of savings from an 89-year-old widower of Japanese descent.  Siegfried has been sentenced to 63 months in prison and been ordered to pay over $500,000 in restitution to his victim.

Siegfried first knocked on the old man’s door pretending to be distraught.  He falsely told the man his parents just died and he needed to borrow money.  Siegfried told the man he would inherit “substantial money” from his parents’ estate and used his Japanese heritage to induce the man to give him money to pay the probate fees.  From 2009 to 2013, Siegfried frequently spent time in the Colorado Department of Corrections, where he repeatedly called and sent letters to the old man asking for money for more probate fees and for his diabetes medication (a disease he never had).
