Having the ‘Death Talk’ With Clients

Grim-reaperThere are many tools that individuals may use to make sure their wishes are followed when they are nearing death, or the decision arises whether to end life-prolonging measures through the use of modern medical technology. While planning tools such as advance directives and health care proxies can be used to express end-of-life preferences, many are intimidated or hesitant to use them because it requires contemplation of their death. However, it is important that individuals speak with those close to them about their views on life-prolonging care, and it is important for estate planners to ensure that clients understand the various types of life-prolonging care and the importance of making sure their preferences are documented. Having ongoing discussions about end-of-life decisions with clients can help normalize talking about death, and make it easier for the client to be willing to explore what their wishes are and put those wishes on paper.
