Lawsuit Against Marion Barry’s Kidney Donor

Cora Masters Barry, the widow of deceased D.C. Mayor Marion Barry, is suing her late husband’s kidney donor for the “unauthorized use” of his celebrity.  Kim Dickens, who once donated a kidney to Marion Barry, “is listed as the co-founder and chairwoman of the Marion Barry-Kim Dickens Kidney Foundation.”   The suit alleges that Dickens is unlawfully using the late Mayor’s name and likeness for the financial benefit of the foundation.  Masters Barry seeks “to enjoin Dickens from using Barry’s face and terms such as “Mayor for life” to benefit the foundation.”  The claim also seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
