Archbishop of Canterbury Reacts Strongly To Right To Die Bill In Parliament
The Archbishop of Canterbury has come out strongly against a bill to be introduced in Parliament that would give terminally ill patients to right to end their lives. Archbishop Welby stated that allowing assisted suicide would cross a ”legal and ethical Rubicon” and overturn a long history of criminal and human rights restrictions on assisted suicide. The Archbishop also expressed concern that this bill would allow unscrupulous relations to pressure a family member into suicide in order to avoid the burden and expense a prolonged medical battle would entail. However, there is strong support for the bill from Labor MP’s who hope to guide an assisted suicide bill to a floor vote for the first time since 1997.
