New EU Regulations Simplify Cross-Border Inheritance
For many years inheritance has been a complicated issue in the European Union because of the different laws that exist in each country. Now there is a new regulation that will impact every EU member state except Ireland, the UK, and Denmark. According to the new EU regulations the laws of the country that the decedent habitually resided in will govern the distribution of that person’s estate. The main problem that will likely come up with the new regulation is clarifying what is meant by “habitual residence.” This will become a tricky issue for people that have assets spread out in multiple different EU member states.
