Mississippi Law Professor Leads Charge To Change State’s Guardianship Laws
Guardianship laws have been in the news lately as greater attention has begun to be paid to the lack of oversight this occurs in many cases. In Mississippi, the situation has been no different and a group has been organized by a University of Mississippi law professor that is encouraging the state to update it’s laws. Primarily, the group wants to require guardians to submit to the court a status update on the health and general well being of the ward in addition to the financial accounting report that is currently required. They argue that this will give the court a better idea of the true state of the ward rather than the purely economic viewpoint that is solely presented at present. Currently, the proposals have not been acted on by the legislature but due to the growing concern for proper oversight it will only be a matter of time before some reformist action is taken.
