New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Signs Law Dealing With Adult Guardianship Issue
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has recently signed a law which “clarifies that a guardian for an adult appointed legally in another state under the Uniform Adult Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act is empowered to appear in New York courts and manage and dispose of real estate held by the protected person in the state.” The State of New York is now a part of a coalition of 30 other states that have already began adhering to provisions of a multi-state guardianship act as early as April 21, 2014. The purpose of the legislation is to help incapacitated adults avoid duplicative guardianship services when they move between different states. The bi-partisan measure that was “sponsored by state Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein, D-Brooklyn, and state Sen. Kemp Hannon, R-Garden City,” will take effect immediately.
