Providing For An Animal Companion With A Pet Trust
Pets have become a very important part of modern American life, and there are many pet owners that want to make sure that their beloved animal companions are provided for when they pass away. In 1993 the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws and the American Bar Association added Section 2-907 to the Uniform Probate Code. This article provides people with advice on how to set up a trust for a beloved pet. “Today, the majority of states recognize some form of planning for pets, and more than three dozen states currently have laws on the books about pet trusts.” The specific laws dealing with pet trusts can vary from state to state. A person involved with creating a pet trust will typically designate a trusted person to serve as a caretaker for the pet. This article discusses many important planning techniques that a person should follow when setting up a pet trust.
