Georgia Supreme Court Will Decide On Value Of A Dog

Family petThe State Supreme Court in Georgia is hearing a case dealing with the value of a beloved family pet. In this case that is discussed in the article the family is suing a kennel claiming that they were responsible for their dog’s death. The kennel is currently arguing that pets are property and that the family can only recover the market value of that property, and they say that because the family paid nothing for the dog when they rescued her that they should get nothing. “The Monyaks say they spent $67,000 on veterinary and related expenses, including regular dialysis treatments, trying to keep their dog alive, and their suit seeks to recover that sum.” This case raises important issues about the sentimental value that people place on their pets. There are many people that consider their pets to be members of the family and view them as being more than just property.
