Should A Beloved Pet Just Be Viewed As Property
This article describes a horrible story involving a family who had a pet dog that was accidentally put to sleep by an animal shelter. When the family sued the shelter worker seeking damages for their pet dog Avery’s sentimental value they were shocked to learn that in Texas “loss-of-companionship” damages are only available for the loss of close human companions. In Texas as well as many other states pets are considered property, and the family who lost their dog found out that they were only entitled to recover their pet’s market value. This article goes into detail describing the way animals are treated under the law. There are efforts underway to change many of the laws dealing with animals. Many people view their pets as members of the family and more than just mere property.
