How Advisors Can Handle Couples Who Fight

Fighiting couplesMarriage can bring stressful times, but money is one of the most contentious issues. Our attitudes toward finances are often shaped by long-standing childhood memories. Being an advisor, who must deal with couples fighting, can make for uncomfortable situations and tough positions. There are techniques, however, that can help advisors handle these arguments and solidify a further relationship.

Advisors should remain neutral, never taking sides—the client is the couple, not the individual. Reframing the discussion can also help to interrupt the argument before it becomes dysfunctional. Additionally, remember, taking a break from an argument can help alleviate any irrational discourse.
