Marine Corps Veteran: I’m Thankful I Wasn’t Offered Assisted Suicide When I Was Told I Was Dying Three Years Ago

'After reviewing how much your treatment is costing this hospital. I'm going to recommend assisted suicide.'J. J. Hanson is grateful he does not live in a state where assisted suicide is legal. Three years ago, Hanson was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and told by physicians that he would not live longer than four months. In this time of depression, Hanson believes that he might have opted to end his life if he had the opportunity. Fortunately, he decided to fight his cancer and had great success with experimental treatments that extended his life and allowed him to see the birth of his second son. While many tout assisted suicide as a merciful option, studies show nearly 25% of those requesting assisted suicide suffer from a severe depressive disorder. Also concerning is the increasing number of insurance companies that refuse to provide treatment for terminal illnesses but are willing to offer aid in purchasing suicide drugs.
