The Connection Between Retiring Early and Living Longer
Most employees suffering under the daily, soul-crushing ritual of work, bleak fluorescent lighting, and bosses who are out of touch do not need any additional reason to retire early. A 2017 study published in the journal of Health Economics provides an extra incentive though: longer life. A group of economists from the Netherlands studied the effects on Dutch civil servants who qualified for and took early retirement in 2005. The men who opted for the early retirement option were 2.6% less likely to die in the ensuing 5 years compared to their still-working peers.
