Finding Romance Later in Life
Finding that one, special person can be difficult at any time of life, but it can be especially difficult for older singles. Some mature singles are looking for something light, fun, and non-committal after a divorce or an especially difficult breakup. Others are seeking are more intimate, long-term relationship. For these older romantics, new technological advances in the dating arena can be obstacles to finding that special someone. Marge Coffey, 73, a therapist who helps single seniors, says that those looking for love online should enlist the help of supportive friends when getting started. She also suggests hiring a professional photographer to take photos for an online profile. Though expensive, she believes it can aid in creating a good first impression. Pepper Schwartz, a University of Washington sociology professor and AARP’s relationships expert, coaches patience when looking for the right person: “When you started to get serious when you were young, it was never easy. It’s not easy now. But it can be a lot of fun.”
