Paul Batura: My boss named me in his will – I couldn’t believe what he left me
Paul Batura recently published an article discussing his bosses display of generosity. As Batura put it, “Bosses can make or break a job wherever you work. I went through a lot of them at Lord & Taylor, but there’s one, in particular, I’ll never forget.”
In the Article, Batura went into depth about his relationship with his boss Sidney. Batura explained that he liked his boss immediately because he was kind, courtly, and humorous. Batura stated, “He could be grumpy and used to complain when folks wouldn’t buy, especially if he thought they had a lot of money. Truth be told, he thought everybody was rich. “Look at the rock on that lady’s finger.” Batura described Sidney as a “lifetime bachelor.”
One day, Batura found Sidney at the store unresponsive and immediately called 911. Unfortunately, Sidney passed away in the hospital. Following Sidney’s passing, Sidney’s attorney told Batura that he was named in Sidney’s will and invited him to the public reading.
Batura found out that Sidney left his record collection to Batura based on their mutual love of music. However, Batura stated that he did not remember them ever discussing their mutual love of music. Batura assumed that Sidney took his “inquisitiveness” as an appreciation of music.
Batura explained his embarrassment of his wishing for a financial windfall but then stated, “It turns out, I received something even more valuable than money, though, and I’m not talking about disco music and John Travolta. Instead, I received a reminder that sometimes the best thing you can give to people is your attention and your interest.”
