I asked a 105-year-old when middle age starts: Her answer delighted me—and made me feel better about turning 40

OLD PEOPLE HUGGINGTurning 40 often raises questions about aging. Is it the start of midlife or something more meaningful? For Shirley Hodes, a vibrant 108-year-old, the answer is simple: “Middle-aged? That’s when you start collecting Social Security! At 50, you’re just starting to live.”

Her outlook aligns with research showing that a positive mindset about aging can boost health and longevity. Negative beliefs can limit life’s potential, while positive ones inspire habits like building relationships, learning new skills, and managing challenges with resilience.

Shirley embodies this mindset. After retiring at 70, she audited college classes and built new connections. Even in assisted living, she stays engaged, curious, and socially active. Her advice? “Keep your sense of humor, give back, make younger friends, learn, and have fun.”

Aging isn’t about limitations; it’s about embracing opportunities. With the right perspective, 40 becomes the start of a new, exciting chapter.
