A Mesa family has been reunited with their mother’s cremated remains after a funeral home mistakenly gave the ashes to another person who was picking up remains for someone with the same last name.

Beau Jent and his siblings went to Sunflower Cremation and Burial last month to have their 65-year-old mother, Barbara Hall, cremated. When they returned last week to make final arrangements, they learned Hall’s remains had been given to the wrong person on Dec. 1.

Security video shows a man entering the funeral home with a manila folder and having a conversation with the funeral director before going to a back room. The man was picking up ashes for his own loved one who had the same last name as Hall.

Thirty minutes later, the man left with Hall’s ashes instead of his relative’s remains, placing them in the passenger seat of his vehicle.

Documents show only Jent’s brother, Cameron Hall, was authorized to pick up the remains. The funeral home confirmed they failed to collect identification or document anything when the ashes were given to the man.

Detectives confirmed Tuesday that they found the remains and resolved the mix-up.
