The Dead Give Money to Support Candidates
Since January of 2009, thirty-two deadpeople on federal campaign records have contributed more than $586,000 topolitical platforms, congressional, and presidential candidates. The news wascaught when USA TODAY completed an analysis of the Federal Election Commissionfilings. Following the trend, recently, a senate race had rumors emergingabout a donation by a contributor who was dead. Under federal campaignrules, individuals can leave money to political candidates and committeessimilar to how people can leave money to charities. However, people must adhereto some federal restrictions. The donation cannot exceed the contributionlimitations. Currently, there is a case pending before a Washington D.C.federal appellate court attempting to overturn those limits.
