Australia and Same Sex Marriage
Australian law defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman and the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard remains opposed to gay marriage. On Wednesday, the Australian House of Representatives voted 98-42 against legislation that would have legalized gay marriage. This vote seems to be in contrast with public opinion as polls indicate that most Australians support gay marriage. The senate is expected to vote on a separate but similar bill next week.
Senior government minister Anthony Albanese thinks that parliament will eventually catch up with community opinion.
