Nursing Home Statistics

Elderly_gentleman Though many families of elderly loved ones believe that their loved ones will receive excellent long term care in a nursing home, statistics found on the Masters in Health Care website indicate that problems in long term care may be more prevalent than many believe. Below are a few of these statistics.

  • More than thirty percent of nursing homes report experiencing resident abuse.
  • Nearly all nursing homes had at least one deficiency in 2005.
  • As many as 5,000 elder deaths may be caused by negligence.
  • In a single eight hour shift, a nurse may observe up to thirty incidents of aggression.
  • Nearly all nursing homes hire and employ at least one convicted criminal.
  • One in four nursing homes receive citations for causing the death of or causing serious injury to a patient.
