Texas Voters Prohibit Formalized Same-Sex Relationships

On November 8, 2005, the Texas voters approved an amendment to the Texas Constitution which prohibits the state legislature, a city, or any other governmental unit from passing legislation which formally recognizes any type of same-sex relationship, be it a marriage, civil union, or domestic partnership.

Here is the text of new Article I, § 32:

(a)  Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.

(b)  This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.

The amendment received approximately a 76% approval.  See Texas Secretary of State, 2005 Constitutional Amendment Election.
