More on Anna Nicole Smith’s Husband, J. Howard Marshall

It has been reported and debated whether Anna Nicole Smith’s husband, J. Howard Marshall, taught courses in wills, estates, and trusts while at Yale Law School.

Jeffrey A. Cooper, Esq. (Principal, Private Clients Group, Cummings & Lockwood LLC; Associate Professor of Law (effective 8/06), Quinnipiac University School of Law) consulted with the dean of YLS, Harold Koh, and reports the following:

J. Howard Marshall, II was an Assistant Dean at Yale Law School in ’31-33, sitting in an office he called “rather sumptuous” (per his autobiography, Done in Oil). Dean Marshall specialized in Law and Economics, studying under a pioneer in the field, Walton Hale Hamilton. He wrote a famous YLJ article with Norman Meyers on Legal Planning of Petroleum Production Nov. 1931 YLJ 33-68. This led to his being offered a job as Asst Solicitor at Dept of Interior which he did from 1933-35, before going off to make his fortune.  Sources consulted were unable to definitively nail down the question of whether Marshall taught T&W.
