Should Edgar Allan Poe’s remains be moved?
Edgar Allen Poe, a renowned American poet and writer whose whole life was filled with tragedy, has once again merited discussion here. Earlier on this blog, I discussed the troubles with the executor of his estate. Now, the battle is over his remains.
The following details are from Ian Urbina, Baltimore Has Poe; Philadelphia Wants Him, NY Times, Sept. 6, 2008:
- Poe was buried in 1849 in Baltimore.
- Edward Pettit, a Poe expert, claims that his remains should be moved to Philadelphia.
- Pettit claims that because he wrote his most famous works in Philadelphia, he should be buried there.
- Pettit has advocated a self-help transfer and is quoted as saying, “I’ll bring the shovel.”
- Pettit and Jeff Jerome (curator of the Poe House in Baltimore) will debate the issue on January 13, 2009 at the Philadelphia Free Library.
- Back in the 1800’s, Poe’s relatives considered moving his remains to New York.
- Another Poe expert, Kevin J. Hayes, claims that the body should be in Richmond, Virginia.
