MLK’s Children Battle — Update
Earlier on this blog, I have reported on the various disputes among the children of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King.
Recently, I discussed a new battle involving Coretta’s estate. Bernice and Martin Luther III are refusing to turn over photos, letters, and other papers to the person (Barbara Reynolds) who is preparing Coretta’s biography. Dexter filed suit to force his siblings to comply. The publisher (Penguin) has indicated that if the author does not receive the requested material, it will terminate its $1.4 million book contract and demand return of a $300,000 advance.
The following update is based on MLK Jr. kids must resume documenting papers, USA Today, Nov. 1, 2008:
- A judge ordered Bernice to continue cataloging hundreds of boxes of Coretta’s property.
- This process will be managed by a court-appoint special master.
- Dexter continues to assert that Coretta did not want Barbara to prepare her memoir.
