Adolf Merckle Update

Merckle_adolfEarlier on this blog, I reported that Adolf Merckle allegedly committed suicide on January 5, 2009 by throwing himself in front of a speeding train in Ulm, Germany.  It is believed that the bleak financial situation of his financial empire lead to his decision to self-terminate.

In a sad bit of irony, two days after Merckle’s death (January 7, 2009), “creditors agreed to provide a bridge loan for its VEM Vermögensverwaltung holding company.”  See Merckle family empire gets bridge loan, International Herald Tribune, Jan. 7, 2009.

Special thanks to Adam J. Hirsch (William and Catherine VanDercreek Professor of Law, Florida State University College of Law) for bringing this development to my attention.
