Face Transplant Update — All is going well

FaceEarlier on this blog, I reported on the first face transplant performed in the United States.  Although one person suggested that the patient be given the option of assisted-suicide, it appears that the patient is happy and doing well.

The following information is from Marilynn Marchione, First US face transplant patient leaves , AOL News, Feb. 7, 2009:hospital

  • The patient is able to breathe, eat, drink, smell, wink, and purse her lips.
  • She is quoted as saying, “I’m happy about myself.”
  • The surgery took 22 hours.
  • The surgery replaced 80% of her face.
  • She shows no signs of rejecting her new face; the immune-suppressing drugs are working well.
  • She still needs restorative dental work.

Special thanks to David S. Luber (Attorney at law, Florida Probate Attorney Wills and Estates Law Firm) for bringing this article to my attention.
