Fallen Hero Saves Lives Even in Death
The heart of a 21-year old Army Ranger who died as a result of injuries sustained while on duty in Afghanistan saved the life of a friend of an extended family member through organ donation. The Army Ranger had indicated organ donor preference on his driver’s license and in his living will. His kidneys, pancreas, and liver were donated as well.
The family of a donor may designate an organ recipient from the eligibility list; however, there is only a small chance that the organ will be a match for the designated recipient.
Says the Army Ranger’s mother, “I know that Ben wanted to help save lives . . . and it really prolongs Ben’s life and honors his memory so much and honors me in that we could save other lives.” Mark Berman, The Heart of a Hero Beats On, Wash. Post, Aug. 8, 2009.
