Maine’s Same-Sex Marriage Law on November Ballot
The November ballot in Maine will ask voters whether they want to overturn a law that makes same-sex marriage legal. Question one on the ballot will read, “Do you want to reject the new law that lets same-sex couples marry and allows individuals and religious groups to refuse to perform these marriages?” Emily Sherman, Same-sex marriage battle moves to Maine, CNN Oct. 25, 2009.
The law was signed by Governer Baldacci in May but by September, opposition groups had the signatures necessary to get the issue on the ballot. If the new law is upheld, Maine would join the following states that currently recognize same-sex marriage:
- Massachusetts
- Vermont
- Iowa
- Connecticut
- New Hampshire
As if the ballot in Maine wasn’t controversial enough, it will also contain a question asking voters whether they want to legalize the use of marijuana for medical reasons.
