Coming Soon: Michael Jackson Themed Cirque du Soleil Shows

Michael Jackson’s estate and Cirque du Soleil are teaming-up to create two theatrical shows based on Jackson’s music.  Details are below:

• One show will open in Vegas in 2011 and then travel worldwide. 
• The second show will open in 2012 as a permanent Vegas attraction complete with an accompanying Jackson-themed nightclub. 
• Seemingly true to Jackson’s lifestyle, the shows will be elaborate, will possibly use 3-D and holographic images, and will be the most expensive Cirque du Soleil production to date. 
• The deal creates a joint venture between the Jackson estate and Cirque du Soleil, splitting costs and profits 50/50.
• The estate will also earn royalties on music used during the shows.

One of the executors of the Jackson estate stated that “[i]n both shows you will feel Michael Jackson in the room,” which will likely encourage some to buy tickets but also discourage others.  Ben Sisaro, Another Deal on Jackson, With Cirque, NY Times, April 20, 2010.
