Face Transplant Patient Enjoys New Face
I previously blogged about a Texas man receiving the nation’s first full face transplant in March. On Monday, twenty-six-year-old Dallas Wiens joined surgeons in Boston for his first public appearance since the surgery. He was sporting dark sunglasses and a goatee.
Dallas received a new nose, skin, lips, muscle, and nerves from an anonymous donor. He said that “it feels natural” and as though it’s his own face. The surgeons were not able to restore his sight, but he did recover his sense of smell. Further, he will probably only have partial sensation on the left side of his forehead and left cheek due to badly damages nerves.
